Join us for Family Shabbat!
September 20, 2016
The Karaite Press, a Project of the Karaite Jews of America, has published its latest work, Royal Attire. The book was originally a letter written by a Karaite Jewish sage to a European Christian king, in which the Karaite sage outlines the major differences between Karaites and Rabbanites. The work has been translated from Hebrew and annotated with footnotes and endnotes to help readers get the most out of the text.

Family Shabbat and Weekend Gathering - A Great Celebration!
Visitors from throughout the world recently joined us for a weekend of learning, prayer and, of course, spectacular food. The weekend began on erev Shabbat with a large gathering at Congregation B’nai Israel for services, followed by dinner and singing of Shabbat songs. On Saturday morning, our sanctuary literally overflowed with members and guests for an innovative Family Shabbat Service, long in the planning and soon to be replicated. Having really listened to the members of our congregation who asked for more opportunities to participate, more English in the service, and more involvement by members of all ages and genders, we delivered. We brought the Torah to the podium so that we could include a woman reader for the Torah portion, and we put the spotlight on many youngsters whose Hebrew study allowed them to participate with great enthusiasm. Thirty individuals participated in the service, bringing great joy and pride to their family and friends. We were delighted to engage several of our visitors including those not raised in the Karaite Jewish tradition, who had learned Karaite prayers and melodies and recited them before the entire congregation. After an inspiring Devar Torah and Torah Service, the community sang traditional melodies and enjoyed a festive meal together. The weekend concluded with havdalah services. We were very gratified by the level of engagement with nearly 100 participants on Saturday morning and varying other numbers participating through the weekend. For those who missed this great occasion, mark your calendars now for the next Family Shabbat scheduled on December 3, 2016; stay tuned for more information. We look forward to more such simchas in 2017 and beyond, especially after we renovate our spiritual space and expand to include the Karaite Jewish Cultural Center.
