Taking out the Torah
At the Karaite Jews of America, the hazan begins the Torah service with a melodic recitation of the Shema, which the congregation repeats. The introduction to the Torah service ends with an affirmation that Adonai is king, Adonai was king, and Adonai will be king. In between, the hazan recites a prayer that describes 22 different aspects of our relationship with God - one aspect for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet. For example, God is our father, our creator and our redeemer.
Two young members of our synagogue recorded this beautiful prayer. You can see the prayer here at page 55 of this online . Shabbat prayer book
The recording contains the entire portion read by the hazan, but does not contain the responses by the congregation. The congregation's response is denoted by the words at the end of each line in the prayer book. For example, the congregation recites the "shema" in each place where the line has the word "shema" written at the end of it.
